Public Interest (2022)
Site-specific live performance

Public Interest is a site-specific intervention that took place during the period of  Shostakovich’s Quartet Concerts at Gewandhaus zu Leipzig, Leipzig, Germany.

As the visitors approach the entrance of the building, the spotlight follows them  persistently, yet it switches targets abruptly. The light wanders around the area,  creating an eerie atmosphere, and occasionally shoots certain patterns of musical notes on the brutalist architecture of Gewandhaus zu Leipzig.  Can it be a spotlight for the star on the stage? A searchlight in persistent search of somebody particular? Perhaps an attempt for an abduction by an extraterrestrial creature?

This work draws inspiration from the life of Shostakovich, who lived in paranoia caused by the fame and surveillance of the regime.

The group exhibition <DSCH> is a collaboration between the orchestra house Gewandhaus zu Leipzig and the class of Expanded Cinema at the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig. The artwork started by reflecting on the life and works of Dmitri Shostakovich, a Soviet-era Russian composer and pianist. This site-specific intervention took place during the period of Shostakovich's quartet concerts (Feb. 6–13, 2022) in Gewandhaus zu Leipzig, Leipzig, Germany.
